A place built for people who have worked their whole lives and want the rest of it lived well: their own front door, their own kitchen, neighbours who speak their language, and a community designed around how an older body actually moves through a day.
Why we are building this
Why we are building this
Many of us left. We raised children in Brooklyn, in Miami, in Montreal, and we sent money home. Now we are older, and the question comes back around: where do we want to spend the years we have left?
For some the answer is where the winter is long and the family is close. For others it is home — the language you dream in, the food that tastes right, the light in the afternoon. But going home has been hard to arrange. There has been nowhere to go that offered a decent house, reliable water and power, a nurse nearby, and neighbours instead of isolation.
GENESIS Adult Community is our answer to that. It is not a facility and it is not a nursing home. It is a neighbourhood, purpose-built, where an older person keeps their independence and their dignity, and is not alone.

What GENESIS Adult Community is
GENESIS Adult Community is independent living. Every resident has their own home, their own key and their own kitchen. You come and go as you please. You keep your own routine.
There is a clinic on site providing primary care — blood pressure, diabetes management, medication review, wound care, routine consultation, and a nurse present on weekdays.

What it is not
It is not an assisted living facility, a nursing home, or a memory care unit. We do not provide twenty-four-hour nursing, personal care, or supervision for cognitive decline.

Residents who need help with dressing, bathing or medication may engage a private helper, and we can help you find one — but that is a private arrangement, not a service we run.

The homes
A house, not a room
Each resident has a complete home. Not a bedroom in an institution — a house with a front door that locks, a kitchen you cook in, and a porch you can sit on.
Every home is designed for an older body from the start, rather than adapted afterwards:

From the path to the front door, and level throughout inside.
Wide doorways
A walker or a wheelchair passes through without difficulty.
Roll-in shower
With grab rails, a seat, and a floor that does not become slippery when wet.
Lever handles everywhere
On every door and tap — kinder to arthritic hands than round knobs.
Good light and generous windows
Switches placed where you can reach them.
Emergency call points
In the bedroom and the bathroom.
Covered gallery
Shades the house and gives you somewhere to sit outside in the rain.
Homes are offered in single and shared configurations, so a couple, two siblings, or two friends can live together.

Days with something in them
Isolation does more damage to older people than most illnesses. The community is laid out to make company unavoidable in the ordinary course of a day.
Shared kitchen and dining room
A hot meal served daily. Cook for yourself when you want to. Come and eat with people when you do not.
Market pavilion
Vendors, produce from our own gardens, and the ordinary business of buying your own tomatoes — which is not a small thing when you have been doing it your whole life.
Gardens you can work
Raised beds at standing height for anyone who does not want to kneel. Fruit trees, herbs, a place to be useful.
Gathering hall
For dominoes, cards, music, worship, film evenings, and visiting family.
Shaded, level paths
Lit, with benches placed so that you are never far from somewhere to sit down.
Grandchildren welcome
There are guest rooms, and the community is built on the assumption that family will visit and stay.

Hospital care is in Les Cayes and Cap-Haïtien. Advanced or specialist treatment generally means transfer, and transfer in Haiti is not always quick.
We would rather tell you this plainly now than have your family discover it in an emergency.
Before you decide, we ask every prospective resident to have a conversation with us about their health, and we may recommend against relocation. We would rather lose a resident than accept someone this community cannot safely support.
Power, water and the things that usually fail
The lights stay on
Anyone who has spent time in Haiti knows the daily arithmetic of power cuts, water deliveries and charcoal. For an older person that arithmetic is not an inconvenience — it is a risk. A fan that stops in August. A fridge that cannot hold insulin. Water that has to be carried.
GENESIS Adult Community runs on the same platform we have built for our other developments:
Solar generation with battery storage
Sized so that lighting, fans and refrigeration continue through the night and through a grid outage.
Rainwater capture and treatment
With storage sized for the dry season, so water does not depend on a delivery.
Biogas from kitchen and garden waste
From the community’s own waste, for cooking and hot water.
Backup generator
For the days the weather does not cooperate.
You should not have to negotiate with the infrastructure at seventy-five. That is the point of building it this way.

If you are arranging this for a parent
Most of the people reading this are not the future resident. You are the son or the daughter, in New York or Boston or Montreal, trying to work out whether this is a good idea and whether you can trust it.
Here is how we try to earn that.

You will hear from us regularly, not only when something is wrong.
Every payment to the corporate account
Every payment goes to the corporate account of X-Rental & Services Inc., a Delaware corporation — never to an individual, never to a relative, never in cash. If anyone claiming to represent us asks otherwise, it is not us.
Nothing agreed except in writing
Nothing is agreed except in writing, signed. No verbal quotation from anyone, including us, means anything.
You are welcome any time
There are no visiting hours. We will help arrange the trip.
One thing we ask you to check yourself
Health coverage. Medicare does not travel — it does not pay for care received outside the United States. Any relocation from the U.S. or Canada needs private international health cover arranged in advance, and you should confirm what it covers before, not after.
Is this right for you?
Honestly, who this suits — and who it does not
This community is likely a good fit if you:
- Manage your own daily routine — dressing, bathing, medication — with or without a private helper
- Have stable health conditions that primary care can manage
- Want your independence and your own household, not to be looked after
- Speak Kreyòl or French, or want to be somewhere you can
- Have family who will visit, or want the company of neighbours your own age
This community is likely the wrong choice if you:
- Need help with the activities of daily living and cannot arrange a private helper
- Have dementia or significant memory loss requiring supervision
- Depend on dialysis, home oxygen, or frequent specialist appointments
- Have a condition that has led to repeated hospital admission in the past year
- Need twenty-four-hour nursing or expect to soon
- Rely on Medicare and cannot arrange international health cover
If you are in the second list, please do not relocate here. We will tell you so during the conversation, and we will not take a deposit from someone we do not think we can look after well.
